The IBM Homepage Reader was one of the first talking Web browsers for BVI users. Produced by IBM's Special Needs Systems, Homepage Reader audibly read Web pages and the Microsoft® Windows® desktop. Since its discontinuation in 2006, many other fine products have taken its place.

Jaws is a screen-reader-magnifier that uses high quality speech output, a quality sound card, and tools for browsing Web sites, such as navigation key commands. JAWS recognizes everything on the Internet, including paragraphs, headings, lists, and tables. A free demo is available on the Freedom Scientific Web site.

OpenBook from Freedom Scientific
OpenBook, a combined scanner and reader converts printed documents or graphic-based text into digital text, uses speech and optical character recognition (OCR). Users can scan bound books using the Pearl document camera.
